Accessibility Options

If you cannot read it, hear it, or operate it the way you need to, none of the rest of Pelorus matters. Pelorus follows the settings you have already made in iOS, and it adds a few of its own where the system ones do not reach. This page lists them in one place.

VoiceOver

Every control in Pelorus has a name. Card headers announce the engine and your position in the stack, such as 2 of 7, whether or not the counter is shown on screen. The results added by Search Deeper sit under a heading you can reach with the headings rotor. The result list, the chips above it, and the synthesis card's sources are all reachable in order.

Text Size

Pelorus follows the text size you set in iOS, including the larger accessibility sizes. Rows in Settings rearrange themselves at large sizes so that a label and its value never overlap. Reader's own text size is separate, because an article and a settings screen have different needs.

Contrast

Contrast, under Settings > General > Appearance, pushes text and background further apart across the app. It adjusts both of them, not only the text. Every color combination in Pelorus's own interface clears the usual contrast standards at every setting, with text at 4.5 to 1 or better and controls at 3 to 1 or better, so the slider is there for your comfort, not to rescue text that was unreadable to begin with.

Reduced Motion

With Reduce Motion on in iOS, Pelorus drops its own animations. Card Animations, under Settings > General > Appearance, turns them off in Pelorus alone. When a card switches from an engine's page to the simplified list, the swap is a short fade with animations on and an instant change with them off.

High-Legibility Fonts

Reader's high-legibility family, Atkinson Hyperlegible and Lexend, is free for everyone. Both are designed so that similar letters are easy to tell apart. Choose one under Settings > Reader > Reading Font, where a live preview shows the change. The rest of Reader's typography is in Reading and Listening.

Read Aloud and Focus

Read Aloud reads any article in Reader, in a voice and at a speed you choose, with the words highlighted as they go. Highlight Text While Reading is a switch under Settings > Reader if you would rather it did not. Focus fades everything but the paragraph or line being read, which can make a long article easier to stay with. Dimming darkens the page on its own. Reading and Listening covers all of these.

Image Descriptions

Describe Images Without Alt Text, under Settings > Reader, writes a description for an image whose page did not provide one, so that VoiceOver has something to say. The descriptions are made on this device from what it recognizes, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Haptics

Haptics, under Settings > General > Appearance, turns the small taps that confirm an action on or off.

The microphone in the search field turns your voice into a search. The speech is processed on the device.

Keyboard Shortcuts

With a keyboard on iPad, every main action has a shortcut.

Siri, Shortcuts, and the Action Button

Pelorus offers New Unified Search, New Search, Erase Current Session, Erase & Open, and Open Home Site to Siri and the Shortcuts app with no setup. Erase Current Session runs without opening the app, so it can sit on the Action button. Personalizing Pelorus has the details.
