Working with Presets
The engines you want for a question about a medical study are not the engines you want for a question about a restaurant. Switching them on and off by hand before every search is the kind of chore people stop doing. A preset is that set of choices saved once, with a name, so that the right setup is one tap away.
What a Preset Holds
A preset is a temporary set of choices laid over your settings:
- Which engines run, and in what order.
- Whether the search builds a Unified Search card.
- The result filter, such as showing only pages two or more indexes found.
- Engine weights, which decide how much say each engine has in the Unified ranking.
Load a preset and those choices apply. Clear it and your settings are exactly as they were. Your saved settings never change because you used a preset.
Making One
There are two ways.
- Set things up the way you want, then go to Settings > Search > Presets and tap Save Current Setup as a Preset…. Give it a name.
- Go to Settings > Search > Presets, tap New Preset…, and choose the engines, the filter, and the weights from a blank slate.
A preset can have its own shortcut. Give it one in the preset's Bang field, and typing that shortcut before a search runs the preset once, without loading it. Advanced Searching explains shortcuts.
Loading and Clearing
Hold the search button, or tap the arrow beside it, and look under Presets. Tap one and its name appears on the button. Clear Preset puts your settings back. Edit Presets… opens the same list in Settings, where you can rename a preset, update it to your current setup, or delete it.
Picking a different search mode from the button's menu, or loading another preset, replaces the loaded one.
Presets and Pelorus Unlimited
Presets are free. A preset can include more engines than the free limit, and the limit still applies when it runs: a search without Pelorus Unlimited runs up to two engines at a time. Weights and the result filter inside a preset take effect with Pelorus Unlimited.
